Glenn Davis   Glenn and Teresa Davis

USTA Georgia is such a great program that even famous baseball players can’t stay away! Former professional Glenn Davis and his wife, Teresa, are lending their hands to USTA Georgia and the CORTA staff this weekend at the Senior League State Championships.

Glenn is formerly a member of the Astros, Orioles, Royals and Mets. He was a 5 time National and 5 time International All-Star, as well as a Silver Slugger, which means he was the best hitter for that season. The first baseman ended his career with an overall .280 batting average in 1993, but what does a retired Baseball player do next?

Davis and his wife had the urge to find an activity that they could do together. The two decided to take up golf. Golf was a fit for Glenn, but not for his fashion-savvy, social butterfly of a wife! She objected to Golf because of its lack of “cute” clothing and interaction with others. Next, the two moved on to tennis. Luckily Teresa was so picky about the sport they choose because tennis has been exactly what they need, both individually and as a couple. Teresa is happy with her new tennis wardrobe, while Glenn is much more satisfied with hitting a moving ball, rather than a stationary ball in golf. Glenn proudly agreed with his wife that tennis a physical activity, it offers a good opportunity for women who love fashion, and it is very social. Basically “tennis is all in one!” Glenn said. Tennis also fulfilled their desire to find an activity that they would both enjoy together.

Even after experiencing years of professional baseball, Glenn would rather be on a tennis court (unless it is his career)! He just recently moved up the 4.0 level. You are probably thinking, “how can someone who has only been playing for three years be higher than me already?” Well, aren’t we all! Technically, Glenn has been preparing for tennis his whole life with baseball. His first baseman skills have helped with his hand-eye coordination. He said volleying is like catching balls at the first base. His reaction time at the net is so quick because in baseball he had only a fraction of a second to react. Serving is like throwing a baseball, also. Both baseball and tennis require the use of balance, good footwork and proper positioning. Don’t get the idea that it is easy to go from tennis to baseball, though. Glenn said that the hardest thing to do, out of any sport, is to hit a baseball!

Now that Glenn has retired and lives in Columbus, he enjoys spending time with his family, going to the golf coarse and playing tennis at Green Island Country Club. Even though the Davis’ only began tennis three years ago, Teresa is already on the CORTA board and volunteers for special events. Teresa and Glenn have been very happy in Columbus, agreeing that it has been a wonderful atmosphere to raise a family. Glenn likes the feeling of blending in with the crowd and just being himself. The couple have three daughters; Sharayah, Tiffany and Gabrielle. All three girls are involved in tennis, as well.

So, what are you waiting for? We have a famous baseball player right in front of our eyes! Go get yourself an autograph before you leave!
