Tournament Athletic Trainer Lisa Wilcoxson |
This weekend would be one large injury without the help of
athletic trainer, Lisa Wilcoxson. Lisa obtained her bachelor’s degree in
sports medicine from Valdosta State University, as well as her master’s
degree in public administration and health services from Columbus State
University. Lisa quickly moved from attending Columbus State University as a
student, to becoming an athletic trainer for the CSU athletic department.
Lisa originally started out as a trainer for Columbus State
University three years ago. When word got around town about her success as
an athletic trainer, she began filling in for other trainers that normally
work for CORTA. Staff members and volunteers were so impressed with her
ability to cure injuries, that she now regularly works tournaments around
Columbus. Basically, Lisa is the best of the best!
Lisa has been a tremendous help throughout the tournament this
weekend, from preventing injuries to curing them. So far, players have come
to Lisa for ankle sprains, strained muscles, cramps due to heat exhaustion,
head injuries, foot fractures and hand fractures. They always feel much
better after obtaining Lisa’s help. Trainers aren’t just for injuries,
though. Players can see Lisa even if they are afraid of a possible injury.
She tapes ankles, Achilles, applies elbow straps and finger splints. She
also provides ice for cramps, falls during a match, or any other reason you
are in need of it.
This is Lisa’s second tournament in a row. She is very hard
working and has a great attitude. Lisa does not mind working long hours or
weekends. It is a choice because she enjoys helping people and seeing them
being able to continue playing a sport they enjoy. Her favorite sport to
work with is basketball because she has the opportunity to cure all
different types of injuries. Laughingly, she said if she is asked what her
favorite sport to work with is when she is forty years old, she would say
golf!
From the USTA Georgia and CORTA staff, to participants in the
tournament, we would all like to say “thanks!” to Lisa Wilcoxson. We hope to
see her at the Senior State Championships every year!
