Born April 29, 1970 in
Las Vegas, Nevada was Andre Agassi. He turned pro in 1986 and retired after
winning the 2006 US Open in September of 1996. Agassi won an Olympic gold
medal in singles, is one of five male players in history to have one all
four Grand Slam events, won the Tennis Masters Cup, had eight Grand Slam
wins and 17 ATP Masters Series wins. He ended his career with an overall
record of 870-274. Agassi became the number one player in the world in April
of 1995. He married Steffi Graf in October of 2001 (who is the #2 favorite
female player at the tournament). Together they have two children named
Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle.
Agassi has participated in many charity events throughout the
years. He
founded the Andre Agassi Charitable Association in 1994, which assists the
youth of Las Vegas. He was awarded the ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian award in
1995 for his efforts to help disadvantaged youth. Agassi is one of the most
charitable involved player in the history of professional tennis.
Andre Agassi is a role model that all players should look up to.
He is not only one of the best players that ever existed, but he has helped
thousands of children with his charity events. It is no surprise that Agassi
is the most respected player at the 2008 Senior League State Championships.
Other Players that were nominated included Bjorn Borg, Rafael
Nadal, Rod Laver, John McEnroe, and Jimmy Connors. Also, a men’s 3.5 team
captain, Sidney Crews nominated USTA Georgia’s Director of Leagues, David
Bain as his favorite tennis player of all time! What an honor!
Chris Evert was born December 21, 1954 in Boca Raton, Florida.
Evert turned professional in 1972, at age 18. Her game excelled over the
years, earning her 18 Grand Slam singles titles, three Grand Slam doubles
titles and the number one ranking in the world for seven years. Chris Evert
holds the best win-loss record in singles out of any professional tennis
player that has ever existed, ending with 1,309 wins and just 146 losses.
Evert was named the third best tennis player in the 20th century
in book The Greatest Tennis Matches of the Twentieth Century. She
also never lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament.
Other women nominated during the poll this weekend included
Evonne Goolagong, Justine Hennin, Martina Navratilova, and Billy Jean King.
Thank you for everyone’s participation in the 2008 Senior League State
Championships weekend poll!
