Rule of the day: When to call a let

By Jenna Wright

“LET!!” is a term often yelled out on a tennis court as a signal from one opponent to another that they have a significant reason they need to stop replay a point. There are many cases in which an opponent has the right to call a let, and a few in which lets cannot be used.

It is okay to call a let if…

·       The reliever of a serve clearly sees the ball touch the net and land in the correct box.

·       A ball from a surrounding court enters either side of your court, affecting your ability to continue playing the point.

·       An object (tennis ball can, water bottle, etc.) rolls onto your court, distracting your point of play.

·       The server is interrupted during delivery of the second service (server is entitled 2 serves in this case).

·       A delay is caused by the receiver or official.

It is NOT okay to call a let if…

·       A spectator makes a call (“out,” “fault,” etc.)

·       Off court sounds (ringing cell phones, grunting from other courts, etc.)

·       The point is finished and then a player notices a ball or other object on the court.
